Surgery for a wrist fracture is not always necessary

It is important to constantly evaluate our treatment options of even the most common injuries, like a wrist fracture. Surgery, while important for many injuries, is not always necessary to achieve a good outcome. This was the rationale behind Dr. Sungaran’s research work that has now been published in JAMA Surgery, the highest ranking surgical journal in the world. This collaboration of highly trained and well respected Surgeons from Australia have shown that for a wrist fracture in our older ... Read More

Peer review-an important component of continuing education

Thanks to teleconferencing, peer review and clinical audit of our cases are still continuing during these times. This is an important part of Orthopaedic surgical practice in a major teaching hospital like Concord Hospital and is vital for learning. These audits are attended by Surgeons, trainee surgeons and resident medical officers as well as our Nursing and Allied health team members. We use these as a teaching tool and also for discussion of complex patients and to debate treatment ... Read More

Elective Surgery update

Elective surgery will restart from next week (Tues 28th April). However the Government has mandated a reduced capacity by 50% until we know what happens with PPE stocks. Therefore this will mean only half the number of patients can be booked on due to a strict reduction in session times to 4.5hrs. For anyone awaiting surgery at a public hospital with Dr. Sungaran (Concord or Canterbury Hospitals), the admissions office will continue to prioritise based on clinical urgency and they will contact ... How does COVID-19 affect elective surgery?

Coronavirus or specifically COVID-19 is having a big impact on our lives at present. For those planning for their upcoming surgery, it raises many important questions. For example, will I be at risk of contracting COVID-19 when I am in Hospital? What will happen if I get COVID-19 after my operation, and what effect will that have on my recovery? And even the idea that can my surgery be delayed until all this settles down. For now, the public and private hospitals that Dr. Sungaran works at ... Read More

Health effects of smoke haze

The current bushfire situation has brought much debate about climate change and our future. One aspect of this is the present and future effect of the smoke and ash on our health and the health of future generations. A recent article from The Sydney Morning Herald has highlighted several facts including the worrying link between particulate debris in our airways and the development of neurological conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. There is also evidence that residents of ... Read More

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should…

As Surgeons we are trained to "fix" a problem. If a bone is broken we can use plates and screws to realign it and relieve pain. If someone cuts their finger, we can repair their nerves, tendons, and arteries to restore its appearance and function. If you have an arthritic joint, chances are we have a replacement that we can implant to improve your motion. But one of the hardest things to do as a Surgeon, is to tell a patient that you cannot help them with an operation. Just think about ... Read More

Hand exercises while in a cast can improve grip strength

During this morning's first session at the Australian Hand Surgery Society annual meeting, Dr. Sungaran presented his study on grip strength in older patients treated for a wrist fracture with a cast. This was a prospective, randomised controlled trial (PRCT) which is regarded as high level evidence that the outcomes are of clinical significance. The main finding of this study was that grip strength was noticeably better in patients who had a hand exercise program even while they were in ... Read More

Presenting our research

We are proud to share some of our research with our colleagues at the upcoming Australian Hand Surgery Society (AHSS) meeting in Adelaide this year. This represents one of our ongoing projects and some fine work by our Registrars and Allied Health staff at Concord Hospital. We firmly believe in research that can benefit our patients, and the outcomes from this study have shown that an early exercise program can make a difference, even when a patient is in a cast following a wrist ...
