Services Provided by Our Orthopaedic Surgeon

At Southern Hand & Wrist, orthopaedic surgeon Jai Sungaran offers a full range of services to patients of his Caringbah practice, serving the Sutherland Shire, South-Eastern Sydney, and surrounding communities.  He provides expert diagnosis of and treatment for virtually every type of injury and condition involving the hand and wrist, with an emphasis on restoring function and relieving pain.  His practice is focused on serving the best interests of the patient at all times, even if that means advising them against undergoing surgery.

To view treatment options to specific injuries, diseases, and disorders, please visit the individual pages devoted to hand and wrist conditions.  To view specialised services provided by our orthopaedic surgeon, please visit the following pages:

  • Microsurgery: Microsurgery of the hand and wrist involves the use of a specialised operating microscope to make repairs to extremely small tissues using miniaturised instruments and sutures finer than a human hair. It is due to the advent of microsurgical techniques that Dr. Sungaran is able to stitch together the ends of severed blood vessels and nerves with absolute precision, enabling such procedures as arterial repair and replantation of amputated digits to be performed successfully.
  • Wrist arthroscopy: Also known as keyhole surgery, arthroscopy allows Dr. Sungaran to perform complex wrist surgery that once would have required large incisions through significantly smaller incisions, reducing both the risk of complications and recovery time for patients. Arthroscopic wrist surgery entails the use of a fibre optic tube with a tiny camera attached to one end, which is inserted through one of the small incisions.  This camera transmits real-time, high-definition images to a screen, allowing Dr. Sungaran to view his work without having to perform open” surgery.
  • Acute injury service / urgent appointment: Dr. Sungaran accepts requests for urgent review from health professionals. If you are a health professional with a patient who has a hand or wrist injury, please see this page for instructions.
  • Post-operative care and hand therapy: The success of any surgical procedure depends on the willingness and ability of the patient to be an active participant in his or her recovery. Recovering from hand and wrist surgery involves more than simply resting and waiting for wounds to heal.  Patients must diligently follow all post-operative instructions provided by Dr. Sungaran.  Equally importantly, they must attend their hand therapy sessions and perform all exercises prescribed to them by their appointed hand therapist.  Sungaran refers patients to a group of hand therapists with whom he works exclusively and whom he trusts completely.  Hand therapy is as essential to the full restoration of function and range of movement to the hand as the surgery, itself.

These represent just a small sample of the services available at Southern Hand & Wrist.  To learn more about the many services provided by orthopaedic surgeon Jai Sungaran and his team, we invite you to contact our Caringbah or Sydney Inner West clinic location today.  We would be pleased to answer any questions you might have and assist you in scheduling an appointment.
