Urgent Hand and Wrist Care: Request a Review

Southern Hand & Wrist makes every effort to accommodate health professionals with patients who require urgent hand and wrist care.  At our Sutherland Shire office locations, Dr. Jai Sungaran generally sees patients by appointment only.  However, if you are a health professional with a patient who requires urgent review, please click on the Urgent Review Requested” button to transmit an email directly to Dr. Sungaran’s phone service.

We always strive to respond to requests for urgent review as soon as possible.  If life or limb is at stake, the patient should be referred to the nearest Emergency Department for immediate medical attention.

Examples of Urgent Hand and Wrist Injuries

Examples of urgent hand and wrist injuries that Dr. Sungaran will review on request include:

Occasionally, when patients experience particularly severe soft tissue injuries, yet x-rays reveal no fractures, delayed review may be the preferred course of action.  This is sometimes the case when the swelling and pain associated with an injury are so severe that diagnosis of the damage is difficult or impossible.

What to Do in Cases of Dire Emergency

In cases of dire emergency, the primary objective is to provide patients with whatever treatment they need to ensure their survival and safety, as well as the best possible state of their hand that can be managed, until they arrive at the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital.  After the patient has been referred to the hospital, you may then contact Dr. Sungaran’s phone service to request an urgent review.

Please encourage the patient not to eat or drink anything.  If the patient has severed both major arteries to one or more fingers or to the entire hand, or if the patient has suffered an amputation, be certain to use a non-stick dressing to cover the wound.  In cases of amputation, gently clean the part with clean water, being careful not to scrub, and wrap it in sterile gauze.  Then place the wrapped part in a plastic bag and put it in a container in which it will stay cool as it accompanies the patient to the hospital.

If a patient is suffering from an infected or contaminated wound, irrigate the wound with either saline or clean water.  Administer antibiotics and, if necessary, tetanus prophylaxis immediately.
